3D ART

INTRODUCTION

3D has fascinated me for a long time - ever since the days of my old ViewMaster viewscope, when I was a little kid. My current non-software 3D collection includes:

a book on the process with lots of images from old slides, films, magazines and comics

one actual 3D comic (I've seen plenty more, but haven't bought them);

two issues of 'Men Only' magazine with 3D photo essays;

a book called 'Stereogram' by Angus & Robertson (from the 'Magic Eye' days); and

the March 1998 issue of Astronomy, with various 3D pictures from space.

I also have seen a few 3D movies (e.g. 'Flesh for Frankenstein'), and have one on an old beta-videotape. But by far the best example of 3D I have seen has been 'New York - Through the Sea of Time' shot in IMAX-mode. This really has to be seen to be believed - especially the roller-coaster ride and the helicopter trip over the New York skyline.

3D ON THE AMIGA COMPUTER

Working with the Amiga over the years has exposed me to various ways and means of producing this effect, and a summary of my work and findings is presented here - though other types of 3D work can be found on the following disks (red/green, or red/blue glasses required for all):

Fish Disk#206 features a 'stereo demo' and a 3D pic;
a 3D drawing/plotting program can be found on an issue of 'Jumpdisk';
a pretty lame hand-drawn porn cartoon is in issue 4 of 'Hotdisk' (the last- ever issue) produced by Graeme Whittle back in 1990;
I know there are also a few 3D games around (such as 'Wanderer', produced by Elite), though I don't own any.

MY 3D COMPUTER WORK

A brief history of my involvement in 3D on the Amiga runs like this:

1989-ish Got FishDisk#206, for the 3D images and effects;
1989-90 Involvement with production of "Hotdisk" (see above);
1991-92 'Borrowed' the Jumpdisk 3D programs for my 'OCTAROCK-3D' disk;
1993-94 'Grabbed' some images, in HAM-mode, from two special editions on 'Men Only' magazine - to produce my '3D-Girls' 2-disk set. Shortly afterwards, I figured-out a way of producing my own 3D images, using 'VIDI-Chrome' (keep camera steady for "green" and "blue" images and move it slightly for the "red" - before merging all) in order to produce my '3D-Room' disk;
1994-95 Grabbed some pictures from a book of stereograms (in black & white, which I "colourised") - to make my 'Stereo' disk;
1995-96 Experimented with two types of dual-image stereograms ('photo- manipulation', or sectional cutting-and-pasting; and consecutive video- images), to produce my R- and X-rated 'Doubles' disk;
1996-97 Produced the 'Oh, Lois!' disk featuring 'consecutive-video-image' pictures of Teri Hatcher, taken from a video The Cool Surface. These images were presented in a slideshow format - with two sets of stereoscopic pictures per screen.

This being said, I find it difficult to maintain any sort of long term interest in these techniques. Even IMAX still produce more new films in 2D than 3D. The thing to remember is that it's possible, with a bit of time and effort, to create new 3D images - or convert existing 2D images - with a minimum of equipment.

A QUESTION OF STYLE

Finally, as some explanation for the emphasis on sexual content on this page, I should point out a few things. As with all creative skills, the old adage that 'necessity is the mother of invention' applies here too. In order to develop an artistic skill or method one has to apply it to something and its here that the female form serves as the ideal subject.

Call it genetic imprinting, but even quintessential landscape pictures have their rolling hills and valleys. Anyway, without getting caught up in some Paglian discussion on art theory, the results - in terms of developing new 3D techniques - speak for themselves.
